A third generation Californian, (Sarah) Frances’ father George Albert “Bert” worked many years in the oilfields of Coalinga and Southern California in the early 20th century.

He and her mother built their home and planted fruit orchards in Orange Cove, California. Her mother, Rhoda Stearns Rutan, graduated with her sister in California’s first class of Registered Nurses.

Family knew her as Frances though she was named Sarah Frances because she was born on her Aunt Sarah’s birthday.

Frances comes from a family of notable accomplishments. 

(Sarah) Frances and her four younger brothers, George, Samuel, Charles and Kenneth, grew up in Orange Cove prior to the Great Depression.

Sam Rutan would go on to become a minister in the Hanford and Visalia area, while George Albert Jr. and his wife, Irene, raised their family and established their dental office in Dinuba.

Their three children had distinguished careers in aviation. Richard was a pilot in the Air Force, Nell was a flight attendant and Albert “Burt” Rutan, developed experimental aircraft which his brother Richard courageously piloted and which hang in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.

After spending time in Central America, Frances returned to her roots in California's Central Valley, making her home in Fresno and Clovis. Her life experiences—from her family's agricultural heritage to international adventures—gave her a unique perspective that enriched her craft as an author.
